Euonymus alatus 'Compactus or Vitis Coignetiae, Harlow Carr, 2nd October 2015

Harlow Carr rarely if ever fails to inspire and yesterday, on a magnificent sun drenched autumnal day in North Yorkshire, it was the perfect place to decide on the "plant of the day". Of course there is no such competition, but I had no sooner selected Euonymus alatus 'Compactus' (Burning Bush) as the most spectacular sight on a spectacular day when, as with buses, another came along. But first, that Winged Spindle Tree.

And then it was surpassed by the Mediterranean warmth of what is surely the most stunning of all autumn's climbers, and I include Virginia Creeper. Vitis Coignetiae, the crimson glory vine, was set against a wall painted orange as if one were in Tuscany. Sensational.
